Crypto.com Prepaid Card Auto Top-Up monitors the applicable card balance and, when it falls below a chosen threshold, converts a selected cryptocurrency from the Token Wallet into the card’s fiat currency. The feature can prevent a routine payment from finding an underfunded prepaid balance, but it also creates an automatic crypto sale whose rate, limits, tax consequences and timing should be understood before activation.

Quick answer: in the official Crypto.com App, open Card → More → Auto Top Up, choose a minimum card balance, select the amount to add and choose a supported cryptocurrency. When the relevant prepaid-card balance drops below the trigger, Crypto.com converts enough of the selected crypto into card currency and loads the configured amount, subject to available funds and regional limits. Use a limited Token Wallet balance and do not select long-term holdings unless automatic disposal is intentional.

What Crypto.com Card Auto Top-Up does

A prepaid card can spend only the value already loaded to it. Auto Top-Up reduces the need to monitor and refill that balance manually. The customer defines two values:

  • Minimum balance: the point below which the automatic action is triggered.
  • Top-up amount: the fiat value added to the prepaid card after the trigger.

The source is a supported cryptocurrency held in the user’s Crypto.com Token Wallet. That crypto is converted into an eligible fiat card currency before the prepaid-card balance is increased. The card does not directly send BTC, ETH or CRO to a merchant.

Auto Top-Up is an automation rule, not an overdraft or credit line. If the source wallet lacks sufficient value, the card is frozen or a limit is reached, the load may not occur and a purchase can still be declined.

First identify the Crypto.com card product

Crypto.com uses related branding for products with different funding and repayment models. The Auto Top-Up function covered here is documented for the Crypto.com Prepaid Card. A prepaid card is funded before spending.

The Crypto.com Visa Signature Credit Card is a separate credit product offered to eligible users in particular markets. It can involve a credit line, statement balance and repayment obligations. Its BTC or CRO reward choice does not turn it into the prepaid card, and prepaid Auto Top-Up instructions should not be assumed to apply to it.

How the balance trigger works

Suppose a user sets a minimum balance of €50 and a top-up amount of €100. When the applicable card balance becomes lower than €50, the rule attempts to sell the chosen crypto and add €100 to the prepaid balance. The new balance is not necessarily €150: it depends on the balance at the time the trigger is evaluated.

If the card had €47, a successful €100 load would produce approximately €147 before any later authorization or adjustment. If a pending purchase temporarily changes available value, the interface may show a different balance while the merchant completes or reverses the authorization.

The trigger should be high enough to cover normal purchases but not so high that small balance changes repeatedly sell crypto. The top-up amount should reflect genuine short-term spending rather than the maximum allowed by the account.

How crypto becomes card currency

The selected token is held in the Crypto.com Token Wallet until a trigger occurs. Crypto.com then applies its available conversion quote and loads the resulting fiat value into the prepaid-card purse. The customer gives up the sold quantity of crypto and receives spendable card currency.

This conversion has three consequences:

  1. Price exposure ends for the sold amount. If the token later rises, the converted portion no longer participates.
  2. Execution matters. The quote, spread and market volatility influence how much crypto is sold.
  3. Records may be required. Selling crypto for fiat can be a taxable disposal even when the fiat immediately funds a card.

Do not describe the process as “spending crypto directly” without qualification. From the user’s economic perspective, crypto is converted and fiat value funds the card.

Which cryptocurrencies can be selected?

Crypto.com instructs users to check the current list in the Card tab under Top Up. The list can vary by region, product and current operational support. A token visible in the trading account is not automatically eligible for card top-up.

Before choosing a source asset, consider:

  • whether it is consistently available for manual top-up;
  • its liquidity and likely conversion spread;
  • whether it represents a long-term holding;
  • the tax lot that may be disposed of;
  • whether enough unreserved balance normally remains;
  • how a sharp price decline could affect the quantity sold.

A fiat-pegged asset can reduce volatility between planning and conversion, but it still carries issuer, market, platform and tax considerations. “Stablecoin” does not mean identical to insured bank cash.

How to configure Auto Top-Up

  1. Update and open the official Crypto.com App.
  2. Select Card from the main navigation.
  3. Open More and choose Auto Top Up.
  4. Read the product and regional information shown for the account.
  5. Set the amount to add when the rule runs.
  6. Set the minimum card balance that triggers the rule.
  7. Select a supported cryptocurrency from the Token Wallet.
  8. Review the source token, card currency, amounts and any displayed limits.
  9. Confirm the setup using the application’s required authentication.
  10. Return to the settings and verify the rule is active and accurately recorded.

Menu names can change. Do not install another application, connect an external wallet or reveal a recovery phrase to enable the feature. Use only the authenticated Crypto.com App and official Help Center.

Choosing a safe minimum balance

The threshold should cover ordinary authorization behavior. Hotels, vehicle rentals, fuel stations and restaurants may place a temporary hold larger than the final charge. A very low threshold can leave insufficient available balance even when Auto Top-Up later succeeds.

A practical method is to review the previous two or three months of card activity, identify the largest normal purchase and authorization hold, then choose a buffer that fits planned spending. The buffer should not invite unnecessary money to remain on a card exposed to loss, fraud or account restrictions.

Auto Top-Up cannot predict a purchase before it is attempted unless the preceding balance already meets the trigger condition. Do not rely on an instant automatic load for an urgent transaction without checking available balance first.

Choosing the top-up amount

A small amount can trigger frequently and create many crypto disposals. A very large amount can sell more crypto than needed and leave excessive value on the prepaid card. Balance convenience against exposure.

Consider:

  • normal weekly spending;
  • the daily Auto Top-Up limit;
  • the card’s maximum balance;
  • load-frequency limits;
  • merchant holds and pending transactions;
  • the number of tax records created;
  • how much card value could be at risk after device or card compromise.

Start with a moderate amount, observe several genuine cycles and adjust. Do not test the rule through an unnecessary purchase or a circular transfer designed only to manufacture rewards.

Regional limits and minimum amounts

Crypto.com currently publishes Auto Top-Up limits by region. Its June 2026 documentation lists a daily automatic limit of 500 units in several card currencies, with minimum automatic loads commonly set at 20 or 40 units depending on market. Those figures are a dated reference, not a permanent global schedule.

Market example Published daily Auto Top-Up limit Published minimum
United States US$500 US$20
Australia A$500 A$20
United Kingdom £500 £40
Europe €500 €40
Canada C$500 C$40
Singapore S$500 S$40
Bahrain and selected GCC markets US$500 US$20

The official guide states that its daily automatic limit refreshes at 23:59:59 UTC. Other card limits may reset on different calendar or rolling schedules. Always use the account’s current Fees & Limits screen for an actual decision.

Auto Top-Up limits are not the only limits

A successful automatic rule must also fit the broader prepaid-card rules. Depending on the region, these can include:

  • maximum card balance;
  • daily, monthly and yearly aggregated loading limits;
  • maximum number of loads per day, month or year;
  • separate card-funded top-up limits;
  • spending and ATM limits;
  • account-level risk or verification restrictions.

Reaching the separate automatic limit does not necessarily prevent all manual funding. Crypto.com says users can manually add funds after reaching the daily Auto Top-Up limit, provided the normal card and account limits still allow it. Confirm the manual preview instead of assuming availability.

Manual versus automatic funding methods

Method Source Main benefit Main trade-off
Auto Top-Up Eligible Token Wallet crypto Responds to a low balance automatically Automatic crypto disposal at an unplanned time
Manual crypto top-up Eligible Token Wallet crypto User chooses timing, token and amount Requires monitoring and action
Fiat or Cash Account transfer Available fiat balance Avoids selling crypto during the load Funding availability and holds vary
Debit or credit card top-up External payment card Familiar and immediate where supported Crypto.com and issuer fees or declines may apply
PayPal top-up Linked eligible PayPal account Alternative funding channel in supported markets Regional eligibility, fees and limits

Do not compare methods using one region’s fee table. Europe, the UK, Canada, Australia, Singapore, the United States and other markets have distinct card programs and disclosures.

Why Auto Top-Up may not work

Possible cause What to check Safe response
Insufficient source crypto Available Token Wallet balance and token price Add an intentional funding source or change the rule
Card frozen Card status in the app Resolve the reason before unfreezing
Daily automatic limit reached Auto Top-Up history and UTC reset Use an eligible manual method if necessary
Maximum card balance Current and pending card value Wait for settlement or reduce the configured amount
Load frequency limit Number of recent loads Increase threshold spacing; do not retry repeatedly
Token no longer eligible Current Top Up asset list Select another deliberately reviewed token
Wrong currency purse Applicable SGD, EUR or GBP purse Review the regional balance rule
Application or account restriction Updates, verification and in-app notices Use official in-app support

Currency-purse behavior in selected regions

Crypto.com currently notes that Auto Top-Up for Singapore, Europe and United Kingdom cards evaluates the corresponding SGD, EUR or GBP purse balance rather than the card’s combined or overall displayed value. A user may therefore see money elsewhere in the card interface while the relevant purse still crosses its trigger.

Before diagnosing a failure or unexpected load, identify:

  • the card’s base and supported spending currencies;
  • which purse the trigger monitors;
  • whether pending authorizations affect available value;
  • whether another purse is converted only at purchase time;
  • the currency used for the configured top-up amount.

Do not infer the rule from a total portfolio figure. Crypto wallet value, fiat account value and prepaid-card purse value are separate balances.

Pending payments, reversals and offline transactions

Card merchants can place an authorization before posting the final amount. The available balance may fall when the hold appears and rise when it is released or adjusted. If the lower balance crosses the threshold, Auto Top-Up may run even though part of the authorization is later reversed.

An automatic load is normally a separate operation from the merchant refund. Do not assume the sold crypto will be automatically repurchased after a hold disappears. Review both the card transaction and top-up history.

Some transport, toll, hospitality or offline terminals submit transactions later. A card that looked sufficiently funded earlier can receive a delayed charge. Automation reduces monitoring effort but cannot guarantee uninterrupted acceptance across all merchant types.

Several authorizations arriving close together can also cause the balance to cross the threshold again after an earlier load. The next attempt remains subject to the configured rule and applicable frequency limits. If repeated conversions appear unexpected, pause Auto Top-Up, freeze the card when fraud is possible and reconcile each authorization before changing the threshold.

Conversion rate, spread and volatility

The source-token quantity depends on the rate available when the automatic conversion executes. A fast price move can cause more or less crypto to be sold than the user expected from an earlier portfolio screen.

Review completed top-ups rather than assuming an external exchange’s quoted mid-market price. The economically relevant comparison includes the app quote, any spread, regional fees and later card-currency conversion at the merchant.

A source token with thin liquidity or large volatility can make automatic sales less predictable. Crypto needed for long-term custody should not sit in the automation source merely because it is eligible.

Tax and record-keeping implications

In many jurisdictions, converting cryptocurrency into fiat is a disposal. A gain or loss may arise from the difference between the token’s acquisition basis and value when Auto Top-Up sells it. The subsequent card purchase is a separate fiat transaction.

Keep records of:

  • date and time of each automatic conversion;
  • token and quantity sold;
  • fiat value credited to the card;
  • exchange rate and any fee shown;
  • the tax lot or accounting method used;
  • related refund or reversal entries;
  • monthly statements and downloadable account history.

A large number of small automated conversions can make reconciliation harder. Choose the frequency and amount with record keeping in mind, and obtain local professional advice when necessary.

Security considerations

Auto Top-Up authorizes future conversions under predefined conditions, so the Crypto.com account and device become especially important. Protect the account with a unique password, strong multi-factor authentication, device security and verified contact information.

  • Enable the feature only inside the official application.
  • Hide sensitive notification previews on a locked phone.
  • Review login sessions and remove unfamiliar devices.
  • Freeze a lost card promptly through the authenticated app.
  • Limit the Token Wallet source balance to a reasonable spending reserve.
  • Do not share an OTP, card PIN, password or wallet recovery phrase.
  • Reject remote-access requests from supposed support representatives.
  • Check automatic loads and purchases regularly.

A card freeze can stop card use and automatic behavior under current rules, but it does not secure a compromised email or Crypto.com account by itself. Investigate the complete account after unexplained activity.

A safer funding design

Instead of choosing the largest crypto holding, maintain a deliberate spending reserve in an eligible token or fiat balance. Keep long-term BTC, ETH or other strategic assets outside the amount exposed to routine card automation. This separation makes the rule easier to understand and limits surprise sales.

A practical structure can include:

  1. a modest source balance sized for several ordinary top-ups;
  2. a trigger above the lowest safe purchase buffer;
  3. a top-up amount covering a normal week rather than a maximum month;
  4. alerts for every card and top-up transaction;
  5. a weekly review of source and card balances;
  6. a separate emergency payment method.

How to update or disable Auto Top-Up

Return to the Auto Top Up settings in the Card section to change the threshold, amount or source token, or to disable the rule. Verify that the new state is displayed after confirmation.

Consider disabling automation before:

  • selling or transferring the source-token balance;
  • travel to a region with different spending needs;
  • closing, replacing or upgrading the card;
  • a planned tax-year cutoff or portfolio migration;
  • account-security investigation;
  • leaving the card unused for an extended period.

Disabling the rule does not reverse earlier conversions or unload the prepaid-card balance. Check regional terms for withdrawing, spending or closing a remaining card balance.

Travel and large-purchase checklist

  1. Confirm that the card is active and the destination allows the product.
  2. Check the relevant card-currency purse, not only total portfolio value.
  3. Review foreign-exchange, ATM and merchant-category fees.
  4. Allow for hotel, rental and fuel-station authorization holds.
  5. Confirm Auto Top-Up has not reached its daily limit.
  6. Check that the source token has sufficient available value.
  7. Keep another payment method for offline or unsupported terminals.
  8. Avoid dynamic currency conversion when its offered rate is worse.
  9. Review notifications without using public links to sign in.

Common Auto Top-Up mistakes

  • Confusing the prepaid card with the Crypto.com credit card.
  • Setting the trigger lower than a normal merchant authorization.
  • Selecting long-term BTC holdings without intending to sell them.
  • Ignoring regional minimums and daily limits.
  • Assuming a token shown in the app is automatically top-up eligible.
  • Forgetting that pending holds can trigger a load.
  • Treating an automatic top-up as reversible after a refund.
  • Ignoring spread and tax records.
  • Keeping an unnecessarily large source balance on an everyday account.
  • Relying on Auto Top-Up as the only payment method during travel.
  • Following a message link to “repair” a failed rule.

Frequently asked questions

How does Crypto.com Card Auto Top-Up work?

When the applicable prepaid-card balance falls below the selected threshold, Crypto.com attempts to convert the chosen Token Wallet cryptocurrency and load the configured fiat amount, subject to available balance and limits.

Does Auto Top-Up spend crypto directly at the merchant?

No. The selected cryptocurrency is converted into eligible fiat card currency before value is added to the prepaid card.

Why did Crypto.com Auto Top-Up not work?

Common causes include insufficient source crypto, a frozen card, a daily or frequency limit, maximum card balance, an unsupported token, account restrictions or the wrong regional currency purse being evaluated.

Can Auto Top-Up sell my Bitcoin automatically?

Yes, if BTC is available as the selected source for the account and the rule is activated. Do not select BTC unless automatic conversion is intentional.

Can I manually top up after reaching the automatic limit?

Crypto.com says manual funding can remain available, but the broader card balance, loading and account limits still apply. Check the current preview.

Does a merchant refund reverse the crypto sale?

Do not assume so. The refund and automatic conversion are separate records. The returned card value may remain in fiat while the previously sold crypto remains sold.

Is Auto Top-Up taxable?

Converting crypto to fiat can be a taxable disposal in many jurisdictions. Rules differ, so retain conversion records and obtain local advice.

Can I use any cryptocurrency?

No. Only supported tokens shown in the current Card Top Up flow are eligible, and availability can differ by region.

Is Crypto.com Auto Top-Up a credit facility?

No. It uses the user’s available Token Wallet value to fund a prepaid-card balance. It does not create an overdraft.

Can I disable Auto Top-Up?

Yes. Return to the Auto Top Up settings and turn off or update the rule. Confirm that the displayed status changed.

Final assessment

Crypto.com Card Auto Top-Up can make a prepaid card easier to use by converting selected crypto whenever the relevant balance falls below a configured threshold. The benefit is convenience; the trade-off is an automatic asset disposal whose timing, rate and tax consequences are not chosen manually.

Use the feature with a limited spending reserve, a realistic threshold and a moderate top-up amount. Verify regional limits and the applicable currency purse, monitor every conversion and keep another payment method available. Most importantly, do not connect long-term crypto holdings to an automatic spending rule unless that is a deliberate part of the financial plan.
