Tangem Pay connects a self-custodial smart-contract payment account to a virtual Visa card inside Tangem App. Eligible users complete identity verification, load supported stablecoins and spend at Visa merchants without moving their entire Tangem Wallet portfolio to an exchange. The main wallet and payment account remain separate, but the card still depends on an issuer, program rules, transaction monitoring and regional eligibility.
Last reviewed: September 28, 2026. Tangem Pay countries, U.S. states, supported networks, stablecoins, tiers, fees, limits and partner arrangements can change. Verify the current terms inside Tangem App and in the Tangem Pay legal agreements before funding the account. What is Tangem Pay?
Tangem Pay is a payment program embedded in Tangem App. It combines an onchain smart-contract balance with Visa card credentials so supported stablecoins can fund ordinary merchant payments. The merchant sees a conventional Visa transaction and receives settlement through the card network; the user’s side is funded from the Tangem Pay balance.
The program is provided by Paera LLC. Current official material identifies Rain as the card issuer and Visa Principal Member, Sumsub as the identity-verification provider and Elliptic as a transaction-monitoring provider. Tangem AG supplies the wallet environment but states that it does not operate the card program.
This structure matters. A hardware wallet can sign permissionless blockchain transactions without a card issuer. A Visa transaction must follow card-network, issuer, identity and compliance rules. Tangem Pay brings the two systems into one interface without making them identical.
Tangem Wallet and Tangem Pay are separate
| Question | Tangem Wallet | Tangem Pay |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Hold keys and sign onchain transactions | Spend a dedicated balance through Visa |
| Identity verification | Not required for ordinary wallet creation | Required for the regulated card account |
| Available assets | Supported wallet tokens and networks | Only currently approved payment stablecoins and funding routes |
| Rules | Blockchain protocol and wallet controls | Also issuer, Visa, compliance and merchant restrictions |
| Balance at risk from card details | Main wallet is not the card spending balance | Loaded payment-account balance |
| Recovery | Tangem cards, ring or configured seed workflow | Separate card-account and identity procedures |
Activating Tangem Pay does not turn every asset in Tangem Wallet into a spendable card balance. Funding is deliberate. This separation lets a user keep long-term assets outside the payment account and load only an operational amount.
Is Tangem Pay credit, debit or prepaid?
Tangem Pay does not provide a revolving credit line. The user loads value first and card purchases draw against that available balance. There is no monthly borrowed balance to repay merely because the virtual card operates over Visa rails.
“Debit” and “prepaid” can have specific legal meanings by country. The safest description is the product’s actual funding flow: a dedicated Tangem Pay balance is funded before spending, and Visa processes merchant transactions against it. Read the issuer agreement applicable to the account rather than relying only on a marketing label.
How a Tangem Pay purchase works
- The user funds Tangem Pay with a supported stablecoin or another currently approved route.
- The payment account displays a combined spending balance.
- The virtual card is used online or through Apple Pay or Google Pay at a Visa merchant.
- The issuer evaluates the authorization against balance, limits, merchant category and risk controls.
- Visa sends the authorization result through the merchant’s acquiring bank.
- After completion, the equivalent value is deducted according to the Tangem Pay settlement workflow.
- The onchain and card views can take time to reconcile after settlement.
A card authorization and final settlement are not always simultaneous. Hotels, car rentals, fuel stations and restaurants can place temporary holds or change the final amount. Do not interpret every temporary difference between the onchain and card balance as missing funds.
What “self-custody” means here
Tangem describes the payment balance as held in a smart-contract account controlled by the user. It states that neither Tangem AG nor Paera takes custody of the funds. This differs from depositing stablecoins into the ordinary omnibus account of a centralized exchange.
Self-custody does not remove every dependency. Tangem Pay still relies on:
- the smart contract and its implemented permissions;
- the Tangem signing and recovery setup;
- supported blockchain networks;
- Rain and the Visa card program;
- Paera account services;
- Sumsub identity verification;
- Elliptic and other compliance monitoring;
- merchant acceptance and regional law.
A user may retain cryptographic control of the payment assets while a card transaction is declined or the card account is restricted. Control of an onchain balance and permission to use Visa are related but distinct capabilities.
Who operates each part?
| Party | Published role | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Tangem AG | Hardware wallet and Tangem App environment | Main wallet security and interface |
| Paera LLC | Provides Tangem Pay to eligible users | Program account and applicable terms |
| Rain | Visa Principal Member and card issuer | Card credentials, authorizations and program controls |
| Visa | Payment network | Merchant routing, acceptance and foreign exchange |
| Sumsub | Identity-verification provider | KYC document and liveness processing |
| Elliptic | Transaction monitoring | Onchain compliance and risk screening |
Partners and responsibilities can change. The legal agreement and privacy notice shown during onboarding are authoritative for the user’s jurisdiction.
Why Tangem Pay requires KYC
A person can create an ordinary Tangem Wallet without submitting identity documents to open the wallet. Tangem Pay is a regulated payment account connected to Visa, so eligible applicants must complete identity verification.
Current onboarding uses Sumsub and may request:
- legal name and date of birth;
- email and country of residence;
- a supported government identity document;
- a selfie, video or liveness check;
- additional evidence when automated verification cannot complete.
KYC applies to the payment account and does not retroactively make ordinary Tangem hardware-wallet creation an identity account. However, transfers between the main wallet and Tangem Pay can create an observable link between an identified payment account and blockchain addresses. Users should understand that privacy boundary before funding.
Availability by country and state
Tangem Pay is available only in eligible locations. Tangem currently describes support in the United States and selected countries across Latin America, Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, Africa and other announced markets. Not every country in a named region is included, and not every U.S. state is necessarily supported.
Eligibility can depend on residence, identity document, sanctions screening, age and program rules. Travel to a supported country does not convert an unsupported residence into eligibility. Confirm through onboarding in the official app and do not use false address information or a VPN to bypass restrictions.
How to activate Tangem Pay
- Update Tangem App from its verified App Store or Google Play listing.
- Open the official application and authenticate the Tangem Wallet.
- Select the Tangem Pay banner or Get card option.
- Scan the Tangem card or supported device when requested.
- Confirm the genuine country of residence.
- Read the issuer, program, privacy and fee disclosures.
- Complete identity verification through the in-app Sumsub flow.
- Wait for eligibility and identity approval.
- Issue the virtual Visa card.
- Review the payment-account addresses before adding funds.
No legitimate activation requires disclosure of a seed phrase, private key or Tangem access code to a support agent. The physical Tangem scan authenticates through the wallet workflow; it does not mean a human needs the secret.
Adding the virtual card to Apple Pay or Google Pay
After issuance, the app can display card details and provide a route to the supported mobile wallet. Apple Pay setup may require entering the number, expiry and CVC and then verifying with an OTP delivered through the approved channel. Google Pay follows its applicable wallet flow.
Before adding the card:
- protect the phone with a strong device passcode;
- enable biometric authorization where appropriate;
- secure the Apple or Google account;
- hide card and OTP previews on the lock screen;
- remove the card promptly from a lost device;
- never provide an OTP in response to an incoming call.
Adding a card to a mobile wallet tokenizes card use but does not make every merchant or disputed transaction risk disappear.
Funding Tangem Pay in 2026
The initial public flow focused on native USDC on Polygon. Tangem’s current Help Center expands supported funding to USDC and USDT on Polygon, Base, Arbitrum and BNB Smart Chain. It also describes funding directly from Tangem Wallet, from an external wallet and through available bank routes.
Because this expanded support is newer than many articles about Tangem Pay, trust the current in-app address and network selector rather than an old screenshot. Each blockchain has a different address or route. A stablecoin symbol alone is not sufficient.
| Funding detail | What to verify | Main failure risk |
|---|---|---|
| Token | USDC or USDT is currently accepted | Sending another token with a similar symbol |
| Network | Polygon, Base, Arbitrum or BNB Smart Chain as displayed | Choosing an unsupported chain |
| Contract | Native supported contract for that route | Bridged or fake stablecoin contract |
| Address | Payment-account address for the exact network | Reusing an address from another network without verification |
| Fee asset | Network fee shown before the transfer | Insufficient gas or reliance on outdated fee promises |
How to fund from Tangem Wallet
- Open the Tangem Pay account.
- Select Add funds.
- Choose funding from Tangem Wallet.
- Select the wallet, supported stablecoin and network.
- Enter a small initial amount.
- Review the destination and blockchain fee.
- Scan the Tangem card and verify the transaction details.
- Wait for confirmation and confirm the amount appears in Tangem Pay.
- Only then consider a larger transfer.
Do not send the entire wallet balance as the first test. Blockchain transfers to an incorrect payment route may be irreversible, and support cannot manufacture control of an unsupported smart contract.
Funding from an external wallet
An external wallet can send a supported token over the exact network displayed by Tangem Pay. Copy the current address, verify it on both devices and make a small test. The sender needs the native network fee asset where required.
Do not assume that because the same hexadecimal address format appears on several EVM networks, every route is supported. The card system must recognize the network and token contract. Tangem warns that unsupported tokens or wrong-network deposits can be permanently lost and cannot be converted or returned.
Bank transfer funding
Tangem has introduced U.S. routing and account details for eligible verified users. Current announcements describe ACH and FedWire funding, with deposited value arriving in the Tangem Pay balance under the program workflow. Fees vary by plan and transfer method.
Only send from an eligible bank account using the exact beneficiary and reference instructions. Bank reversals, name mismatches and compliance reviews can delay availability. A payroll or recurring payment arrangement should be tested with a small amount before it becomes the only income route.
Card balance and onchain balance may differ temporarily
Tangem states that after a purchase, the onchain balance may take up to two business days to update. During that window, the spending balance and blockchain view can differ. Card authorization, clearing and blockchain settlement are separate stages.
Investigate using:
- merchant authorization status;
- posted versus pending card amount;
- the Tangem Pay transaction history;
- the relevant network explorer;
- refund and reversal status;
- current service notices.
Do not send a duplicate payment merely because an onchain display has not caught up with the card view.
Refunds do not behave like withdrawals
According to current Tangem guidance, a merchant refund returns value to the card balance for spending. It may not return to the withdrawable onchain stablecoin balance. This difference is essential when planning to close the account or move funds back to a wallet.
A pending authorization can disappear without being a refund, while a posted purchase may later receive a separate credit. Keep the original purchase and refund records together and allow the merchant’s published processing time before opening a dispute.
Withdrawing unused funds
Tangem Pay provides a route to withdraw supported onchain value back to Tangem Wallet under current rules. Confirm the available withdrawable balance, token, network, destination and fee. A card refund may remain spendable but not immediately withdrawable under the documented distinction.
Never select a network based only on the lowest fee. The destination wallet must support that exact stablecoin contract and chain. Verify the first withdrawal with a small amount.
Fees and exchange rates
Current Tangem material promotes no standard fee for many card purchases, but costs can still arise:
- blockchain gas when funding or withdrawing;
- bank-transfer fees, including published ACH or FedWire charges;
- foreign-exchange markup for a purchase outside the card’s USD basis;
- plan subscription fees;
- additional-card or replacement charges;
- ATM or merchant surcharges where applicable;
- on-ramp provider costs.
At a foreign terminal, paying in the local currency often avoids the merchant’s dynamic currency conversion, which may use a poor exchange rate. Review the Visa rate and issuer disclosure rather than accepting a terminal’s “guaranteed” home-currency amount automatically.
Plans, cards and limits
Tangem Pay has introduced Basic, Plus and announced higher-tier arrangements. Plans can differ in monthly price, Visa benefit level, number of virtual cards, spending limits, bank-funding fees and promotional cashback. Features marked “coming soon” should not be valued as already available.
Current public pages describe examples such as:
- Basic with a free virtual card and lower account limits;
- Plus with a monthly subscription and higher card limits;
- additional cards for separating online or recurring purchases;
- user-configurable daily spending limits;
- limits that can vary with verification, history and risk profile.
Check the actual account screen before purchase. A published maximum is not a guarantee that every transaction at that amount will be approved.
Merchant and transaction restrictions
Visa acceptance is broad, but the Tangem Pay program can restrict merchant categories. Current Help Center material names categories such as gambling, online casinos, liquor stores and others. Availability can also be affected by merchant country, offline processing, recurring billing, preauthorization or compliance screening.
A decline does not automatically mean the blockchain balance is missing. Check:
- available card balance;
- daily user-set and program limits;
- card freeze status;
- merchant category restrictions;
- billing details and CVC;
- online, contactless or recurring-payment support;
- foreign or unusual transaction review;
- service status.
Freezing, replacing and limiting the virtual card
The app can freeze a Tangem Pay card without closing the underlying account. A frozen card should stop new card transactions while leaving the balance in place. When linked to Apple Pay or Google Pay, the token may appear suspended until the card is unfrozen.
If card details are exposed, replacement creates new credentials and invalidates the old ones. Subscriptions using the old number may fail and the new card must be added to mobile wallets. Current guidance describes a replacement fee and warns that completion may occasionally take longer than the usual immediate flow.
Use the configurable daily limit as a damage-control layer. Setting it to zero when the card is not in use can reduce card-spending exposure, but it does not replace account, phone and Tangem Wallet security.
Lost phone or Tangem card
A lost phone exposes app and mobile-wallet risks, while a lost Tangem card affects wallet authentication. Remove the payment card from the lost phone’s Apple or Google account, freeze the virtual card through a trusted device and review recent activity.
For the hardware-wallet side, use a remaining backup card or ring according to the established recovery plan. If a Tangem device and its access code may both be compromised, move the main wallet assets to a newly secured wallet. Our separate lost Tangem card and phone guide covers that process in detail.
Transaction monitoring and privacy
Tangem Pay uses identity verification and blockchain transaction monitoring because it connects onchain funds to a regulated card program. Transfers can be screened for sanctions, fraud and other compliance risks.
Users should expect that:
- the payment identity can be linked to the funded smart-contract account;
- public blockchain history may reveal connected addresses;
- merchant, issuer and Visa records exist for card purchases;
- a transaction can be reviewed or declined under program rules;
- privacy notices govern document and biometric processing.
Using a hardware wallet does not make a Visa purchase anonymous. Do not consolidate unrelated long-term wallets into the payment route without considering address linkage.
Stablecoin risks
USDC and USDT aim to track the U.S. dollar, but they remain tokenized claims with issuer, reserve, smart-contract, blacklist, depeg and network risks. A payment-account balance also depends on its smart contract and supported chains.
Keep only an amount appropriate for near-term spending. A stable displayed price does not eliminate counterparty risk, and card eligibility does not constitute an investment recommendation for either stablecoin.
Security checklist before activation
- Download Tangem App only from a verified listing.
- Confirm backup Tangem devices work before linking important funds.
- Use a unique access code and secure phone passcode.
- Read the Paera and Rain agreements and privacy disclosures.
- Verify country and state eligibility honestly.
- Complete KYC only through the in-app route.
- Enable transaction notifications.
- Set a conservative daily card limit.
- Load a small test amount over the exact supported network.
- Keep long-term holdings outside the payment balance.
- Record an emergency freeze and support procedure.
Travel and large-purchase checklist
- Confirm that Tangem Pay and the mobile wallet work in the destination.
- Review the available balance and daily limit.
- Check merchant holds for hotels, rentals and fuel.
- Review Visa foreign-exchange treatment.
- Select local currency instead of poor dynamic currency conversion where appropriate.
- Keep a second payment method.
- Do not depend on last-minute blockchain funding during congestion.
- Protect the phone from shoulder surfing and theft.
- Know how to freeze the card from another trusted device.
Common Tangem Pay mistakes
- Believing the whole Tangem Wallet automatically funds the card.
- Calling Tangem Pay an anonymous Visa card.
- Sending a supported token over the wrong network.
- Sending bridged or imitation USDC without checking the contract.
- Ignoring the difference between card and withdrawable onchain balance.
- Expecting a merchant refund to return directly to the external wallet.
- Keeping long-term savings in the payment account.
- Assuming every Visa merchant category is permitted.
- Approving KYC through a message link.
- Sharing a seed phrase with supposed card support.
- Treating self-custody as immunity from issuer restrictions.
Frequently asked questions
Is Tangem Pay self-custodial?
Tangem describes the payment balance as held in a user-controlled smart-contract account. Card access still depends on a regulated Visa program, KYC, issuer rules and monitoring.
Is Tangem Pay a credit card?
It does not provide borrowed credit. The user funds the payment balance before spending. Consult the regional card agreement for its exact legal classification.
Does Tangem Pay require KYC?
Yes. The payment account requires identity verification. Ordinary creation of a Tangem Wallet remains a separate process.
Which tokens and networks can fund Tangem Pay?
Current Help Center guidance lists USDC and USDT on Polygon, Base, Arbitrum and BNB Smart Chain. Check the live Add Funds screen because support can change.
Can I fund Tangem Pay from MetaMask or Ledger?
An external wallet may send a supported stablecoin to the correct displayed address and network. It is not linked as the controlling Tangem Pay wallet, and wrong-token or wrong-network transfers may be unrecoverable.
Can I withdraw unused Tangem Pay funds?
Supported onchain funds can be withdrawn under current rules. Merchant refund value can behave differently and may remain in the card balance rather than the withdrawable balance.
Does Tangem Pay work with Apple Pay and Google Pay?
Yes, where the product and mobile-wallet service are supported. Follow the in-app setup and protect the phone account and OTP channel.
Can Tangem Pay be frozen?
Yes. The virtual card can be frozen in the app. This stops new card use but does not replace securing the wallet, phone and account after compromise.
Are there foreign transaction fees?
Visa foreign-exchange rates or markups can apply to non-USD purchases. Merchant dynamic currency conversion may add a different, often worse rate. Review the live terms.
Can a Tangem Pay transaction be declined with sufficient funds?
Yes. Limits, merchant restrictions, offline processing, card status, risk controls or billing-data errors can cause a decline even when a balance exists.
Final assessment
Tangem Pay is a distinctive bridge between a self-custodial stablecoin balance and ordinary Visa acceptance. It keeps the main Tangem Wallet separate, issues a virtual card after KYC and lets eligible users load supported stablecoins for daily spending. That is more controlled than liquidating an entire portfolio through an exchange, but it is not a permissionless Visa card.
The strongest setup uses a small dedicated payment balance, exact token-and-network verification, conservative spending limits and secure mobile-wallet credentials. Users should understand partner roles, identity linkage, refund behavior and temporary differences between card and onchain balances. Self-custody protects control of the smart-contract funds; it does not override Visa, issuer, compliance or merchant rules.
