MetaMask can display many accounts, networks and tokens in one interface, but they do not form one shared balance. Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum, Polygon and BNB Smart Chain maintain separate ledgers even when an EVM account shows the same 0x address. A safe first transfer requires the correct account, network, recipient and gas token—not merely a familiar ticker.

What MetaMask does
MetaMask manages signing credentials and communicates with blockchains. Assets remain recorded onchain. The wallet reads balances through network providers, prepares requests and signs only after authorization. Removing the app does not erase assets, but access depends on correct recovery material.
Wallet, account, address and network
| Term | Meaning | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Wallet | Environment containing recovery sources and accounts | Assuming every visible account shares one backup |
| Account | A signing identity | Using one account for every purpose |
| Address | Public destination on a network | Checking format but not chain |
| Network | Independent blockchain ledger | Thinking a switch transfers tokens |
| RPC | Service communicating with a network | Adding an unverified provider |
Password and recovery
For an SRP-based wallet, the password unlocks that local installation. It does not independently restore the wallet elsewhere. The Secret Recovery Phrase derives accounts created from it and must remain offline. Current MetaMask also offers eligible Google, Apple or Telegram flows with different access behavior. Record which method created the wallet.
Multiple accounts from one SRP
Accounts created sequentially from one SRP have deterministic addresses. After restoration, MetaMask may require creating accounts in the original order until a missing address appears. Labels are local metadata and can differ after restore.
Imported and hardware accounts
An account imported by private key or another SRP is not derived from the primary phrase. Hardware accounts depend on the hardware wallet backup. They may need re-adding after restoration. Never type a hardware recovery phrase into MetaMask; use the supported connection.
Why one EVM address appears on many networks
EVM-compatible chains use related address systems, so one account can show the same 0x address on Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum, Optimism, Polygon and BNB Chain. Each chain keeps separate balances and history. USDC on Base does not become USDC on Ethereum.
Non-EVM networks
MetaMask now supports a wider range of environments. Bitcoin, Solana, Tron and other networks use different address and fee models. Use the address shown for the exact network and verify its recovery boundary.
Switching networks
The network selector changes balances, tokens, history, gas rules and dapp context being displayed. It does not bridge or swap assets. An empty balance usually means the address has no detected assets on that chain.
Chain IDs
A Chain ID identifies the signing environment and helps prevent replay across networks. Verify it with official network documentation. A familiar network name does not prove that a dapp supplied the correct Chain ID.
RPC URLs
An RPC provider handles balance queries, fee estimates and broadcasts. It never needs an SRP. It may observe account queries, timing and IP data, and a malicious provider can misreport state or censor requests. Verify the provider independently.
Add a supported network
- Open Networks in verified MetaMask.
- Search built-in and Additional networks first.
- Select the official network.
- Review details and confirm.
- Verify the selector and explorer.
A network added on one device may not appear automatically on another.
Verify a custom network
Compare network name, RPC URL, Chain ID, currency symbol and explorer with official documentation. MetaMask performs basic validation but does not guarantee a custom network is legitimate. Never approve configuration from an unsolicited message.
Custom RPC trade-offs
Alternate providers can improve availability but add trust and privacy boundaries. MetaMask notes that custom RPCs on certain supported networks may disable Smart Transaction capabilities such as MEV protection until the default is restored.
Gas tokens
Transactions consume network resources. Fees are commonly paid in a native asset, though eligible MetaMask transactions on selected networks can support other fee tokens.
| Network | Typical gas asset |
|---|---|
| Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum, Optimism | ETH |
| BNB Smart Chain | BNB |
| Polygon | POL |
| Avalanche C-Chain | AVAX |
Having USDT does not always make it sendable. Keep a modest gas balance or confirm that an alternative fee option is explicitly offered.
Gas limit and fee components
The gas limit caps computation. A base fee reflects demand, and priority fee encourages earlier inclusion. MetaMask estimates these automatically. Beginners should avoid advanced edits without a clear reason.
Failed transactions can charge gas
A reverted transaction still consumed computation. Inspect its hash and error before retrying. MetaMask does not collect ordinary network gas and cannot refund it merely because the action failed.
Receive from an exchange
- Select account and network.
- Copy the receive address.
- Choose the identical asset and network on the exchange.
- Check minimum and fee.
- Compare the pasted address.
- Send a qualifying test.
- Verify it in the correct explorer.
Never select a route solely because it is cheaper.
Send a first transfer
- Open MetaMask directly.
- Select account, network and token.
- Confirm sufficient gas.
- Obtain the destination through a trusted channel.
- Compare the full address.
- Enter a test amount.
- Review recipient, network, amount and fee.
- Confirm and save the hash.
- Wait before sending the remainder.
Why a test helps
A test verifies the route with limited value. It must exceed any receiving minimum and leave enough gas. Compare the destination again for the main transfer because clipboard replacement can occur later.
Transaction statuses
| Status | Meaning | Response |
|---|---|---|
| Pending | Broadcast but not finalized | Inspect fee and nonce |
| Confirmed | Included by the network | Verify destination |
| Failed | Execution reverted | Inspect error before retrying |
| Dropped/replaced | Superseded or removed | Find replacement hash |
Use the correct explorer
A hash must be searched on its actual chain. No Ethereum result does not prove a Base transfer never occurred. Check status, sender, recipient, value, token transfers and fee.
Token not showing
The network or account may be wrong, token detection may omit it, or the contract may differ. Search the address on the correct explorer. If the balance exists, import the verified token contract. This changes display only; it does not recover or move funds.
Custom-token safety
Obtain contracts from official project sources and confirm network, symbol and decimals. Anyone can deploy a familiar ticker. Do not follow links in unsolicited tokens or sign to “unlock” them.
What restoration includes
Assets remain onchain. An SRP restores derived accounts, while custom networks, tokens, labels and imported accounts can require separate reconfiguration depending on synchronization. Inventory each account by recovery source before resetting.
Missing accounts after recovery
Automatic discovery may stop before a later account containing tokens on another chain. Re-create derived accounts sequentially and compare addresses. Imported and hardware accounts must be re-added through their own methods.
First-week setup plan
- Verify the official installation.
- Protect the recovery method offline.
- Name accounts by purpose without sensitive details.
- Add only networks actually needed.
- Verify RPC details.
- Fund a small gas balance.
- Practice receiving and sending with a test.
- Save transaction hashes.
- Review imported-account backups.
Common mistakes
- Installing a fake extension.
- Confusing password and recovery.
- Sharing the SRP with support.
- Choosing the cheapest rather than matching network.
- Assuming identical addresses mean shared balances.
- Having tokens but no gas.
- Adding an RPC from a message.
- Changing advanced gas blindly.
- Sending everything before a test.
- Resetting before inventorying imported accounts.
Troubleshooting an empty balance
- Confirm the public address.
- Select the network used by the transfer.
- Search the address in that chain’s explorer.
- Confirm the token contract.
- Add the verified custom token if needed.
- Re-add the correct derived or imported account.
Never enter recovery words into a block explorer or “synchronization” site.
First-transfer checklist
- Official MetaMask installed.
- Recovery documented offline.
- Correct account and network selected.
- Receiver supports that network.
- Token contract verified.
- Gas available.
- Address compared fully.
- Test meets receiving minimum.
- Final confirmation matches the plan.
- Hash saved.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the address the same on several networks?
EVM chains can derive the same address, but each keeps independent balances.
Does switching move tokens?
No. It changes which ledger MetaMask displays.
Why can I not send?
Check network, balance and gas asset.
Is a custom RPC safe?
Only after verifying all details through authoritative sources.
Why is an account missing?
Re-add derived accounts in order and separately restore imported or hardware accounts.
Does adding a token recover it?
No. It displays an existing balance.
Can MetaMask reverse a transfer?
No. Confirmed transfers are generally irreversible.
Should beginners edit gas?
Usually no; MetaMask estimates it automatically.
Conclusion
MetaMask is easier once account, address and network are separate concepts. A familiar address can exist across several chains without sharing balances. Every transfer must match the intended ledger and have a valid fee method.
Verify recovery boundaries, network settings, RPC information and gas before sending. Start with a test and retain the hash. This short pause is cheaper than attempting to recover an irreversible mistake.
