Bitcoin dominance measures Bitcoin’s share of the total cryptocurrency market capitalization. Traders often use it to discuss whether capital is concentrating in Bitcoin or spreading into altcoins. The indicator is useful, but it does not prove that an altseason has started.

What Bitcoin dominance measures

The basic calculation divides Bitcoin’s market capitalization by the market capitalization of the tracked crypto market. If Bitcoin rises faster than the rest of the market, dominance generally increases. If a broad group of altcoins outperforms, it may decline. The result depends on which assets and stablecoins the data provider includes.

Dominance can rise while Bitcoin falls if altcoins fall even faster. It can also decline during a healthy Bitcoin rally when Ether and other large assets gain more. Always read the indicator beside absolute prices and volume.

A common rotation sequence

Market cycles sometimes begin with demand for Bitcoin because it has the deepest liquidity and broadest recognition. Profits may then rotate toward Ether, large-cap altcoins and later smaller assets. This is a pattern, not a rule. Stablecoin supply, macro conditions, regulation and new sector-specific catalysts can interrupt it.

Signals traders watch for altseason

  • Bitcoin dominance forming a sustained downtrend rather than a one-day dip.
  • Ether gaining relative strength against Bitcoin.
  • A broad set of altcoins outperforming, not only one memecoin or sector.
  • Rising spot volume and liquidity across several markets.
  • New stablecoin liquidity entering exchanges and on-chain applications.

Why breadth matters

A genuine broad rotation should appear across more than a handful of tokens. Market breadth tools can compare the percentage of assets above moving averages or the number making new highs. If an index rises because one large constituent performs well while most assets decline, the market may be narrower than the headline suggests.

Risks of trading an altseason narrative

By the time “altseason” dominates social media, many assets may already have risen sharply. Smaller tokens carry greater liquidity, smart-contract and concentration risks. Historical returns do not guarantee that old leaders will recover in a new cycle, and token supply may have expanded since their previous highs.

A practical framework

Define the evidence required before changing allocation. Compare dominance across multiple timeframes, examine BTC and ETH relative performance, and verify that volume supports price. Use position limits and rebalance deliberately instead of jumping between every trending asset.

Bitcoin dominance is best treated as context. It can describe where aggregate value is concentrated, but it cannot determine whether a specific altcoin has secure technology, sustainable demand or an attractive valuation. Those questions still require project-level research.
